The 2023-2024 season of Schubert Club Mix opens at the Landmark Center on October 10, 2023 with a performance by close-knit British vocal ensemble Stile Antico, One of the world’s leading a capella ensembles. Stile Antico’s program England’s Nightingale: the remarkable music of William Byrd marks 400 years since Byrd’s death, and will take full advantage of Landmark Center’s cathedral-like acoustic.
With England’s Nightingale, Stile Antico explores the many faces of this extraordinary composer, amongst the greatest that England has ever produced. This program weaves together the strands of Byrd’s complex life as both pillar of the Protestant musical establishment and faithful servant to the underground Catholic community. The audience encounters Byrd working loyally at the Chapel Royal, thrills to his anguished musical entreaties in support of his fellow Catholics, and savours the gentler music of his latter years.
Stile Antico is firmly established as one of the world’s most accomplished and innovative vocal ensembles. Working without a conductor, its twelve members have thrilled audiences on four continents with their fresh, vibrant and moving performances of Renaissance polyphony. Its bestselling recordings have earned accolades including the Gramophone Award for Early Music, Diapason d’or de l’année, Edison Klassiek Award, and Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik.
