About Virtual KidsJam Workshops

KidsJam workshops this season are virtual 25-minute interactive sessions for children ages 5-12 to experience musical performances, get involved through creative activities and movement, and learn about the people, cultures, and sounds behind the music.


Each program will feature a 10 minute CREATE instructional video for you to create an instrument to use during the workshop (not required for participation in the interactive program). Online CREATE videos will be posted one week before the workshop premiere. If you’re interested in purchasing a create kit please contact Kate Cooper at

Storytelling Through Music with Mill City String Quartet

Premieres November 23, 2021, 10:30 | CREATE your own string instrument

Premieres November 30, 2021, 10:30 | ONLINE PROGRAM:

LEARN how the instruments in a string quartet come together to tell stories through music. LISTEN to string quartet music written by Black women composers, and the stories they tell. CREATE your own string instrument and use it to PLAY along with the Mill City String Quartet, or to tell your own stories through music!

Make-at-home string instrument supplies:
8″ plant saucer drip tray – clear, lightweight plastic ones are ideal
7″ wooden/bamboo embroidery hoop with the metal adjustment screw
4 rubber bands of varied sizes:  suggested but not required sizes – 3-1/2″ x 1/4″,
3″ x 1/8″, 2-1/2″ x 1/8″, 2-1/2″ x 1/16″
Tape – Scotch, Masking, Electrical or Decorative Craft Tape will all work
Markers and/or stickers to decorate

LISTEN to and PLAY Bomba and Plena traditional Afro-Puerto Rican music with Maria Isa and the Drums. CREATE maracas and a hand drum to LEARN the basic rhythms of this style of music.
