Barry Kempton, Artistic and Executive Director

Barry Kempton was appointed Artistic & Executive Director of the Schubert Club in January 2012 following 25 years in music administration in Edinburgh, London and St Paul, Minnesota.  Educated in Southampton and Bristol, England, he played piano and trombone from an early age.  As a teenager he was a brass semi-finalist in the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year competition.  He held several administrative positions at the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in Edinburgh before moving to the USA in 1995 to take up the post of General Manager at the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.  During his eleven-year tenure in Saint Paul, his role evolved into Vice President for Artistic Planning, responsible for all performance and educational programming.  In 2007, Barry accepted the position of Chief Executive for the London-based chamber orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, working with Artistic Directors Richard Hickox and Stephen Layton.  Barry moved back to Saint Paul in January 2012 to lead Schubert Club, Minnesota’s oldest arts organization.  He currently serves as a board member for the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center and for the Arts Partnership.  He resides in St Paul with his wife Cheryl and dog Coco.
