Virtual Performance: Danish String Quartet presents selections from Woodworks and Last Leaf

Sunday, May 10, 8:00AM
Sunday, May 17, 5:00PM

In November of 2019, the Danish String Quartet performed a Schubert Club Mix concert, which included songs from their albums of Scandinavian folk music, Woodworks and Last Leaf, to a packed audience at American Swedish Institute. This concert was completely sold out well ahead of the performance, and we know that many of our audience members who wanted to attend were unable to. We hope all will enjoy this full video recording of a truly spectacular evening of folk music with one of the world’s leading string quartets.

ABOUT THE DANISH STRING QUARTET

The Danish String Quartet, Schubert Club’s Featured Ensemble for the 2019-2020 season, made its debut at the Copenhagen Summer Festival in 2002. They are known as one of the greatest string quartets touring the world, performing classical, contemporary, and Scandinavian folk music with passion and precision.

Violinists Frederik Øland and Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen and violist Asbjørn Nørgaard met as children at a music summer camp where they played both football and music together, eventually making the transition into a serious string quartet in their teens and studying at Copenhagen’s Royal Academy of Music. In 2008, the three Danes were joined by Norwegian cellist Fredrik Schøyen Sjölin. Since 2007, the group has curated its own annual festival —DSQ Festival— in Nyboder, Copenhagen. 2016 marked the beginning of Series of Four, the quartet’s new concert series in the concert hall of The Royal Danish Academy of Music, Copenhagen. The quartet was also named as a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist for 2013-15.
