Virtual Event: Winners Recital – Musicians on the Rise

Join us for the 2020 Virtual Winners Recital: Musicians on the Rise, celebrating the winners of the 97th Annual Schubert Club Bruce P. Carlson Student Scholarship Competition. 

This year, we had to transition our in person competition to a digital format. Though we are unable to celebrate the winners in our usual Ordway Concert Hall event, we are thrilled to be able to showcase their work here.

Meet the Performers

Samuel Hines – Guitar

School: University of Minnesota

Teacher: Maja Radovanlija

Born in Southern California, Samuel Hines is an award winning guitarist, with over 35 prizes in international competitions. A doctoral candidate and teaching assistant at the University of Minnesota, his main goal with music is to share with all who will listen. Hines lives in Mora, MN, with his wife Katherine, and besides music, enjoys nature, hiking and good coffee; you can find more about Samuel at www.samhinesguitar.com.

Aurora Wang – Piano Level I 

School: Mounds View High School

Teacher Alexander Braginsky

Aurora Wang is a ninth grader at Mounds View High School. She studies piano with Professor Alexander Braginsky. Aurora is one of the five showcase artists in the 2020 Classical MPR Minnesota Varsity program.

Nita Qiu – Piano Level II

School: Trinity School at River Ridge

Teacher: Joseph Zins 

Nita Qiu,18, graduated from Trinity School at River Ridge this June and will be attending Yale University this fall, with an undecided major but continued piano studies. She has been playing piano and studying with Dr. Joseph Zins of Crocus Hill Studios for 13 years.

Emma Taggart – Piano Level II

School: Saint Agnes High School

Teacher: Reid Smith

Seventeen-year-old pianist and arranger Emma Taggart commands the stage with a personality that is at once engaging and unique. She has given hundreds of solo and duo concerts, placed in national and international competitions, and been featured multiple times on prestigious programs such as NPR’s From The Top and MPR’s Minnesota Varsity.  She studies currently with Dr. Reid Smith and will be pursuing a degree in piano performance with Simone Dinnerstein at the Mannes School of Music.

Hermione Yim – Piano Level III

School: St. Olaf College 

Teachers: Nancy Paddleford & Christopher Atzinger

21 years old, born and raised in Hong Kong. Studied abroad in Italy for two years at UWC Adriatic, currently working on BM Piano Performance and BA Studio Art degrees at St Olaf College, Northfield, MN. Passionate about outdoor activities, the mountains, and sharing music and art with people.

Koki Sato – Piano Level IV

School: University of Minnesota

Teacher: Alexander Braginsky

A native of Tokyo, Mr. Koki Sato is currently pursuing his graduate degree with Prof. Alexander Braginsky at the University of Minnesota. His past teachers include Profs. Alexander Kobrin and Tatiana Muzanova at Columbus State University, where he was a recipient of the prestigious Woodruff Award.
