Virtual Event: Musicians on the Rise – 2021 Winners Recital

Join us for the 2021 Virtual Winners Recital: Musicians on the Rise, celebrating the winners of the 98th Annual Schubert Club Bruce P. Carlson Student Scholarship Competition. 

This year’s competition was held virtually, with a record number of competitors. Though we are unable to celebrate the winners in our usual Ordway Concert Hall event, we are thrilled to be able to showcase their work in this virtual Winners Recital, hosted by Garrett McQueen.

Performers

Brass & Woodwinds Level II – Eleanor Koehler Ellerbe Award
Andrei Bancos, Clarinet
with Jan Matson, Piano

Andrei Bancos is a tenth grader at Century High School in Rochester, MN. He has been playing clarinet for six years, and has studied with Scott Anderson for the last three years. Andrei also enjoys math, playing piano, being a part of the Minnesota Youth Symphonies.

Brass & Woodwinds Level III – Marjorie Porter Scholarship Award
Ningxin (Yo-yo) Su, saxophone
with Casey Dierlam Tse, piano

Ningxin (Yo-yo) Su is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Iowa. There, he is supported by the Iowa Performance Fellowship and is serving as the Teaching Assistant to Dr. Kenneth Tse. As a soloist and chamber musician, Yo-yo is a laureate of numerous national and international competitions and is a founding member of the Amsterdam-based saxophone quartet Ardemus Quartet, which tours extensively in Europe and Asia.

Thelma Hunter / Schubert Club Award
Christian Lampkin, flute

Christian Lampkin is currently earning two MA degrees in Flute Performance and Music Education at the University of Iowa with Professor Nicole Esposito. A passionate musical activist, he promotes social justice through performance as a soloist and chamber musician. This Fall he will begin his Doctoral study in Flute Performance at the University of South Carolina with Dr. Jennifer Parker Harley, as a Graduate Assistant for the Music Entrepreneurship program and a Grace Jordan McFadden fellow with the African American Professors Program.

Guitar – Frank Neibel Whitson Memorial Award
Silvia Miller

Silvia Miller has been a classical guitar student since the age of four, studying under Jean Seils at MacPhail Center for Music and playing before audiences in the United States and Europe. She was a member of the NAfME all-national guitar orchestra for three years in a row, including twice as first chair for her part. She also is a member of the Southwest High School guitar orchestra under the direction of Ruth Lemay.

Piano Level I – Ming Chi and Yu Ann Wang Award
Tasha Piyabongkarn

Tasha Piyabongkarn (age 15) started piano at the age of 5 with Drs. Megan and Christopher Wallace. Currently, she is a 9th grader at Wayzata High School in Minnesota. Tasha has won multiple prizes in solo and concerto competitions; recently, in 2021, she received 1st place for MMTA Junior Young Artist, 1st place for the Northwestern Piano Solo Festival, Runner-up in the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra Rising Stars Concerto competition, Finalist for the YPSCA Concerto competition, and Honorable Mention for the Thursday Musical Scholarship Competition. Aside from piano, Tasha loves playing in tennis tournaments and being on her school’s varsity tennis team, playing violin, and cooking/baking for her family and friends.

Piano Level II – Eleanor J. Andersen Award
Jonathan Chen

Jonathan Chen is 17 years old and a junior at Iowa City West High School. He started playing the piano at the age of six and is currently studying with Jack Winerock and Feilin Lin Murray. Jonathan has won the 2020 MTNA Iowa Senior Piano Competition and has been a prizewinner at the Fifth Paderewski International Piano Competition and the Seventh Chopin International Piano Competition in Hartford.

Piano Level III – Dorothy Ode Mayeske Scholarship Award
Evren Ozel

Evren Ozel grew up in Minneapolis, where he studied piano with Dr. Paul Wirth. He is currently finishing his undergrad at New England Conservatory, where he has studied with Wha Kyung Byun since 2014. In October 2021, Evren will travel to Warsaw, Poland to compete in XVIII International Chopin Competition.

Piano Level IV – Catherine Neimeyer Memorial Award
Daniel Eras

Having garnered numerous prizes and recognitions for his performances in his native Costa Rica, across Europe, the United States, and Russia, including 6 performances at the Carnegie Hall, as well as advancing to the top 9 of the e-Piano International Junior Competition, pianist Daniel Eras left Costa Rica to finish his college education and continue his pianistic career at the University of Minnesota under the instruction of Dr. Alexander Braginsky. Daniel is currently attaining a master’s degree in music performance and Music Theory.

Strings Level I – Anne French Burnham Award
Amelia Zitoun, cello
with Joseph Hauer, piano

Amelia Zitoun is a scholarship Fellow at the Music Institute of Chicago’s Academy, where she studies with Horacio Contreras. She has also had the privilege of working with Jérôme Pernoo, Jesús Castro-Balbi, Xavier Phillips, Richard Aaron, Amir Eldan, and Luis Claret. In 2020, Amelia was a member of the Aurora Piano Quartet, where they won First Place at the Rembrandt Young Artists Chamber Music Competition, and were Quarterfinalists at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. She was also a winner of the 2020 DePaul Concerto Festival, where she played with the Oistrakh Symphony Orchestra.

Strings Level II – Helen Hunt Memorial Award
Maximus Gurath, cello
with Ya-Ju Chuang, piano

Maximus Gurath is a cellist hailing from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and is currently attending the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. He started cello at age four, in a household with four siblings, who all play an instrument. To continue his musical journey, Maximus will be pursuing a degree in cello performance at the Shepherd School of Music of Rice University next fall.

Strings Level III – Maud Taylor Hill Scholarship Award
Caroline Paulsen, cello
with Liang-yu Wang, piano

Cellist Caroline Paulsen currently studies with Hans Jørgen Jensen at Northwestern University, where she received her Bachelor of Music in cello performance in 2020. A three-time scholarship recipient from the Musicians Club of Women’s Scholarship Award auditions, she is also a joint 1st prize winner of the 2020 Thaviu Strings Competition at Northwestern. Caroline is originally from Minneapolis, where she studied with Mina Fisher during high school.

Voice Level I – Helen Hunt Memorial Award
Sarah Rosales, soprano
with Amanda RM Jones, piano

Coloratura soprano Sarah Rosales has been lighting up stages for almost a decade in major shows such as Die Zauberflöte (Queen of the Night), Così fan Tutte (Despina), Der Schauspieldirektor (Madame Herz), and Candide (Cunegonde). Sarah has received 1st place on numerous occasions by the NATS vocal competition, and was recently awarded 2nd prize in the John Alexander National Vocal Competition hosted by Opera Mississippi. In addition she maintains an active musical theater career, and is also a traveling poet, performing in cities such as Houston, New York, and Nashville. www.sarahrosales.com

Voice Level II – Frederick & Florence Paetzold Memorial Award
Lauren Carroll, soprano
with Perry Mears, piano

Soprano Lauren Carroll recently won the National Young Artist Division of the Music Teachers’ National Association voice competition and received 2nd prize in the Central Region NATS Upper College Women’s division. She has been featured in operatic roles such as Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) and Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte). In May 2021, she will graduate from Drake University with a degree in Vocal Performance. Next year, Lauren will be attending Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music – pursuing a Master’s degree in Vocal Performance and Opera.

Voice Level III – Arlene Didier Scholarship Award
Kara Morgan, mezzo-soprano
with Carson Rose Schneider, piano

Kara is a mezzo soprano pursuing her passion to make a name for herself in the opera house and on the concert stage. Recent highlights include a return to Sarasota Opera covering the title role in Dido & Aeneas, a mainstage debut as Hansel in Hansel & Gretel with Fargo-Moorhead Opera, and debuts with local opera companies such as Mill City Summer Opera and Lakes Area Music Festival. Kara is a graduate of Drake University and the New England Conservatory as well as apprenticeships with the College Light Opera Company, Fargo-Moorhead Opera, Sarasota Opera, and Santa Fe Opera.
