Thursday, April 16, 7:30PM

Ordway Concert Hall

Jordi Savall is one of the most versatile and engaging musical personalities of his generation. For more than fifty years, he has devoted his career to reviving and interpreting the vast repertoire of early music, rescuing musical gems from obscurity and neglect for all to enjoy. He has been called a time traveler, a globe-trotting adventurer, a tireless scholar, a virtuoso performer and a visionary ensemble leader.

Hespèrion XXI brings ancient and Baroque music to life under the direction of early-music legend Jordi Savall. Their immensely entertaining programs combine passion and creativity with academic scholarship and make this timeless music entirely captivating for 21st-century audiences. Their International Artist Series program “Songs, Battles and Dances from the Old and the New World” is a sound journey that traces the map of the influences crossed between the Old and the New World. Through three axes—song, battle, and dance—, the repertoire explores how music served as a tool of faith, resistance, and survival during seven centuries of global transformations.

Formed in Basel Switzerland in 1974, Hespèrion XXI’s vast repertoire spans the music of the Sephardic Jews, Elizabethan England, the Spanish Golden Age and “Europa de les Nacions.” The ensemble has produced more than 60 recordings and has toured the globe, appearing regularly at the great international festivals of early music.”Hesperion” is derived from a classical Greek word referring to the people of the Italian and Iberian peninsulas, and XXI refers to the 21st Century.
