The Beauty of Strife
The Grammy-nominated Imani Winds has led both a revolution and the evolution of the wind quintet for the past 20 years through dynamic playing, adventurous programming, imaginative collaborations and inspirational outreach. The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote of a recent performance: “As the group approaches the end of its second decade, this might be what triumph sounds like.” The Group returns to the Music in the Park Series with a program that blends arrangements of classical composers with music from Africa, traditional spirituals and recent works written specifically for the Quintet. They excel in multiple sound worlds, and a varied menu of music is key to their programming. Imani Winds’ commitment to education runs deep. In keeping with their deep commitment to education, the ensemble will be in residence with Schubert Club for 3 days of community-based performances following their Sunday afternoon concert, and will participate in “KidsJam”, musical workshops for young people.
