18th Century

Europe

1768

A student of Gottfried Silbermann, Johannes Zumpe and his colleagues fled Germany for London during the Seven Years’ War. His creation of a conveniently sized, moderately priced, and inexpensive square pianoforte such as this one meant that Zumpe had tremendous influence during his time.   In 1768, a Zumpe piano was used by Johann Christian Bach in the first solo piano performance in London, England.
