Julie Himmelstrup, Announces Retirement at End of the Season
Tuesday, December 19, 2017 (ST. PAUL, MN) – Julie Himmelstrup, founder and artistic director of Music in the Park Series, has announced her plan to retire at the conclusion of the season in late April 2018. Himmelstrup, who founded the series in 1979, has served in this position for 38 years.
A cherished and distinctive audience favorite, the Schubert Club’s Music in the Park Series presents six chamber music concerts annually at the 350-seat Saint Anthony Park United Church of Christ in the Saint Anthony Park neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota. Concerts routinely sell out and subscriber retention remains impressively high. Additionally, family-friendly concerts are offered next door at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.
In the early days, Himmelstrup ran the series out of her own house across the street from the church. An accomplished pianist herself, it is her musical tastes, her finely tuned hearing and her ability to spot emerging classical talent, that have made Music in the Park Series treasured by chamber music-lovers across the Twin Cities. Under her leadership, the series has achieved national prominence, and continues to present chamber musicians of national and international renown. Since its inception, Music in the Park Series has presented more than 200 chamber music concerts and 60 family concerts. For more than three decades, Himmelstrup ran every aspect of the series, including artist selection, program planning, commissioning and presenting new works, fund-raising, ticket sales, volunteer organizing and public relations. In 2010, Music in the Park Series merged with the Schubert Club, since when Himmelstrup has continued to serve as Artistic Director of Music in the Park Series.

Julie Himmelstrup continues to serve as Music in the Park Series Artistic Director through the 2017-2018 season. Thereafter, the series, both concerts and the associated community activities in the Saint Anthony Park neighborhood will continue as Schubert Club programs under the leadership of Artistic and Executive Director, Barry Kempton.

This month we are highlighting the distinctive sweet voices of our music box and phonograph collection, dating back to 1900. Thomas Kuehn, Professor Emeritus in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota and the current Vice President of the Musical Box Society International will demonstrate these fascinating mechanical musical instruments along with other machines that were developed to play instruments such as the pipe organ, reed organ, violin, harp and banjo.
Plus, enjoy wine, refreshments, trivia and interactive fun and music-making throughout the Schubert Club Museum.
Beginning in October, our Museum will stay open until 8pm on the first Thursday of every month. We invite you to come join us on these evenings for live demonstrations, music-making, trivia and complimentary wine.
Beginning in September, the Museum will now be closed on Tuesdays except for special tours. The Museum will be open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays from 12pm to 4pm. As always, the Museum remains FREE for all visitors.
Patron Relations Manager
Reports to Tessa Retterath Jones, Marketing Director
Schedule/Hours: Regular business hours with frequent evening and weekend hours
The Patron Relations Manager is responsible for ticketing and box office services, marketing assistance, audience and donor database management, and development assistance. This position reports to the Marketing Director and takes additional direction from the Director of Development
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of Schubert Club ticket office duties, phone line responsibilities, and day-of-concert counter sales to result in efficient and accurate transactions, streamlined and updated processes and practices, and a seamless customer service experience
- Answer ticket office calls and process ticket orders, turn backs and exchanges; print and mail tickets on a daily basis; monitor unbalanced orders and online subscriptions; and coordinate complimentary and special ticketing requests
- Manage ticket office operations on concert nights, handling all aspects of the ticket purchasing experience
- Coordinate day-of concert logistics including pre-printed tickets, cash requests, signage, special promotions, etc
- Reconcile cash, credit and checks, complete event settlements, enter information into AudienceView, and provide necessary back-up reports for every concert or event
- Keep detailed notes on customer requests, preferences and feedback
- Monitor reconciliation of cash receipts and electronic deposits of credit card transactions from all ticket sales, developing procedures for accurate handling of all legal tender until deposit
- Execute the subscription process including processing orders, tracking and fulfilling seating requests, following up with patrons, and tracking sales for weekly reports
- Identify recurring problems in meeting general customer expectations and suggest solutions to Marketing Director
- Build and coordinate ticketing and development/fundraising systems within AudienceView including series, concerts, pricing charts, subscription, venues, promotional offers, funds management structure and updates to result in updated systems, optimum productivity, and efficient sales flow that result in seamless customer service transactions
- Coordinate the ticketing facets of the organization’s Customer Relations Management (CRM) database, including but not limited to: Venues, Series, Performances, Price Charts, Subscription, Promotional Offers, and Ticket Templates
- Update phone prompts in automated phone tree
- Ensure all offers are built accurately and according to what has been approved, testing all offers prior to their on sale
- Update ticketed events as needed or required by marketing efforts
- Work with AudienceView representatives to improve sales flow and implement new functionality to enhance sales and ease of customer experience
- Pull regular and special reports from AudienceView, ensuring they are distributed to appropriate staff
- Pull reports on fund structure, development reports, and development data
- First point of contact with Finance Manager regarding transaction details
- Provide administrative support including website monitoring, data generation, and email process to assist the Marketing Director and create efficiencies for marketing activities
- Maintain a working knowledge of the Marketing Director’s job duties to fill in as needed
- Attend training, configure events, discount codes, pricing structures, subscriptions, miscellaneous items, ticket templates and venues (in AudienceView) Database
- Maintain Filemaker database with patron contact information and purchasing history
- Assist with email marketing using Mailchimp including monthly imports of new email subscribers
- Import customer information from AudienceView to Filemaker and routinely remove duplicates
- Assist with website updates on a daily basis and social media marketing strategy to ensure materials are accurate and free of errors
- Provide administrative support to the Director of Development and create efficiencies in Development activities.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the Director of Development’s job duties to fill in as needed.
- Quickly and accurately process donations.
- Assist with admin tasks related to special events: e.g. pre and post-concert dinners, special events in the Museum, homes, and patron tour. Assist with coordination of logistics such as signage needs and other day-of details.
- Assist in creating donor solicitation letters, materials, and pull lists from AudienceView
- Track all gifts in AudienceView, gift tracking spreadsheets and update information as needed
- Create and generate thank you letters for gifts
- Maintain donor files
- Edit donor listings in An die Musik magazine
- Support and foster Schubert Club’s collaborative business practices to ensure that all organizational activities support the Schubert Club’s mission successfully
- Assist with setting up concerts and events as requested and needed

Announcing the new
Schubert Club Composer-in-Residence:
plus two additional financial awards for Minnesota composers
St. Paul, MN (Wednesday, June 7, 2017) — Schubert Club announced today at its Annual Luncheon the appointment of Reinaldo Moya as its new Composer-in-Residence beginning September 1, 2017. Moya will serve a two-year term in this position.
The role of the composer-in-residence is to create music, to participate in education and community programs, to advise and to advocate on behalf of Schubert Club. The position was specifically created with flexibility to allow the composer to shape residency activities to fit the individual’s strengths and interests. Reinaldo Moya’s residency plans include writing a chamber opera, introducing a composition element to Schubert Club’s KidsJam workshops and other programs, and providing mentorship to local young composers.
Schubert Club Artistic & Executive Director Barry Kempton said of the appointment: “The strong compositions submitted as part of Reinaldo’s application together with his compelling vision for his residency make Reinaldo an ideal composer-in-residence to follow in the path blazed previously by David Evan Thomas, Edie Hill and Abbie Betinis. I look forward both to supporting Reinaldo in his residency and to the benefits his creative mind and musical sensibilities will bring to Schubert Club. My overriding hope is that during his two-season residency, both he and Schubert Club will learn and develop from one another.”
Reinaldo Moya stated: “I’m beyond excited to be joining the Schubert Club team. Through my compositions, educational activities and role as an artistic advisor, I hope to contribute to the Schubert Club’s mission. One of my goals is to bring awareness to the role that Latin American immigrants have played in our state, both historically and in the present.”
In addition, Schubert Club announced financial awards to support the creation of new works by two other Minnesota-based composers, deVon Russell Gray and Tiffany Skidmore. Both composers were identified during the Composer-in-Residence search process.
About the Selection Process
Minnesota composers were invited to submit an application in early 2017. There were 33 candidates in total. The search committee comprised Artistic & Executive Director Barry Kempton together with composers Clarice Assad and Patrick Castillo.
About Reinaldo Moya
Reinaldo Moya is a graduate of Venezuela’s El Sistema music education system. Through El Sistema, he had access to musical training from an early age and was a founding member of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra touring throughout Europe, North and South America. A graduate of The Juilliard School and a participant in the prestigious John Duffy Composers Institute and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Conce Composers Institute, Moya now lives in Northfield, and is Associate Professor of Composition at Augsburg College. Reinaldo Moya is the recipient of the 2015 McKnight Composers Fellowship, the Van Lier Fellowship from Meet the Composer and the Aaron Copland Award from the Copland House.
About deVon Russell Gray
deVon Rusell Gray, multi-instrumentalist, is best known as dVRG in the acclaimed live hip hop band, Heiruspecs. Lesser known are his classical and chamber music works, film scores, experimental collaborations (SPCO Liquid Music Series), arranging credits (Poliça, The Cloak Ox, Allan Kingdom), session work, and production. Gray, has studied orchestral conducting with world renowned artists Manny Laureano (MN Orchestra) and Donald Palma (Orpheus Chamber Orchestra); and composition with Lee Hyla, & Michael Gandolfi, to name a few. Redefining versatility, dVRG draws inspiration from an enviable record collection, from Claudio Monteverdi to Shuggie Otis, and communicates through nuanced sounds; a musical polyglot disguised as a lone star…ready to super nova.
About Tiffany Skidmore
Tiffany M. Skidmore holds degrees in Vocal Performance and Music Composition from Gonzaga University, Eastern Washington University, and the University of Minnesota. She has studied with Scottish composer James Dillon, Chaya Czernowin (head of the Music Composition department at Harvard University), Jonathan Middleton, and J. Kevin Waters. Her work has been featured in master classes with Brian Ferneyhough, Chaya Czernowin, and Julio Estrada. She has been a featured composer in the Hildegard von Bingen Festival of Women in the Arts and the Rimon Artist Salon, and her work has been performed throughout Europe and the United States by the CSU Stanislaus Concert Chorale, the EWU Concert Chorale, Opus7 Vocal Ensemble, the Kiev Philharmonic, Duo Gelland, Peter Wright (principal clarinetist for the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra), the Hark Quartet, Ensemble Dal Niente, Jeffery Kyle Hutchins, Nanyi Neil Qiang, Without Fear of Wind or Vertigo, and the Strains New Music Ensemble, among many others. She is a member of the American Composers Forum and a founding member of the Minneapolis composer collective, 113.

5 month paid internship (September 2017-January 2018), 12 hours per week
Social Media: This position will be responsible for assisting the Director of Marketing & Ticketing with all social media and online marketing efforts. This will include creating engaging content for social media platforms, making posts to social media platforms on a regular basis including in real-time during events and concerts, interacting with and responding to posts by others on all platforms, and developing new ideas and researching new trends for using social media to assist marketing and communication efforts.
Theoroi – Arts Ambassador Project: This position will assist the Director of Marketing & Ticketing with Schubert Club’s Theoroi program (schubert.org/theoroi). Responsibilities will include assisting with coordination of Theoroi events and extra social events for the group; managing attendance and social media usage by Theoroi members, and assisting with communication to Theoroi members through email and social media. You will be responsible for keeping Theoroi social media up-to-date, posting content on a regular basis to keep the group engaged, keeping the Theoroi website page up-to-date, and responding and interacting with posts on social media. You will be expected to attend Theoroi events and assist with day-of event logistics.
Marketing: This position will assist with many various marketing tasks including but not limited to: submitting concerts and events to local online listings of events; assisting with distribution of marketing materials; helping with website edits and gathering of digital assets; assisting in other marketing and audience development tasks and activities as assigned by the Director of Marketing & Ticketing.
Proficiency in social media including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest & Instagram.
Excellent written communication including strong editing and proofreading skills.
Familiarity with WordPress, MailChimp and SurveyMonkey a plus.
Available to work occasional weekends or evening events.
