Announcing The 2025-2026 Schubert Club Mix Season

By Kristina MacKenzie

Thursday, July 17, 2025 (SAINT PAUL, MN) —Today,Schubert Club announces the 2025-2026 Schubert Club Mix season — the 13th season for the series that aims to take the formality out of classical music. Presented in mostly non-traditional venues across the Twin Cities, Schubert Club Mix treats audiences to remarkable and intimate performances by diverse artists who influence the musical landscape of today.

The 2025-2026 season of Schubert Club Mix opens at the Parkway Theater on October 19, 2025 with a performance by the Grammy-winning American vocal band Roomful of Teeth and flutist and composer Allison Loggins-Hull. Founded in 2009 by Brad Wells, Roomful of Teeth is dedicated to reimagining the expressive potential of the human voice, engaging and collaborating with artists, thinkers, and community leaders around the world. Their Schubert Club Mix program will include a new work by Loggins-Hull, entitled FRICTION – a genre-defying and deeply moving song cycle. FRICTION will feature the composer performing with Roomful of Teeth in this vulnerable work for voices, flute and electronics.

On Saturday, November 8, Schubert Club, the Walker Art Center and Liquid Music will co-present An Evening with Gabriella Smith and yMusic at the Walker. Environmentalist and composer Gabriella Smith and acclaimed chamber ensemble yMusic join forces for the Twin Cities premiere of Aquatic Ecology, a major new work written for the ensemble. The 40-minute piece brings to life hidden ecosystems, featuring raw and processed field recordings from sources including California tide pools and Polynesian coral reefs. The evening opens with the composer herself performing as a duo alongside her longtime creative partner and yMusic cellist Gabriel Cabezas, playing music from their celebrated album Lost Coast and more.

January 22-25, Schubert Club Mix will present a unique immersive experience featuring cutting-edge innovative technology: Mahler Chamber Orchestra – In Virtual Reality at the Minnesota Opera’s Luminary Arts Center. With the aid of VR headsets, audiences will be transported to a fully immersive world of music in which they can move around and through the virtual orchestra as a multi-dimensional recording responds in real-time. Participants will be able to hear and feel what it is like to sit in the middle of an ensemble, and hear the sound emanating from each distinct instrument, opening up striking new possibilities for interaction between listener, performer, instrument and sound.

Rounding out the 2025-2026 Mix Season on Friday, April 24, this year’s Featured Artist, baritone Roderick Williams OBE, will perform a unique recital in the round at Westminster Hall. An English Song Winterreise, Williams mirrors Franz Schubert’s Winterreise with 24 English songs that follow the same path Schubert explored in Winterreise. Williams has curated his own song cycle which includes works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten, and Gerald Finzi, as well as more recent works by Judith Weir and Errollyn Wallen.”

Schubert Club’s Artistic and Executive Director Barry Kempton states: “Each in its own way, the four Schubert Club Mix programs this coming season showcase artists in their most creative and imaginative work:  Roderick Williams singing in the round, performances of music by leading US composers Gabriella Smith and Allison Loggins-Hull, and the opportunity to walk throughout an orchestra playing Mendelssohn and Mozart – a virtual orchestral experience created by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra’s Artistic Partner for Immersive Experiences.”
