Now Hiring: Education, Community Partnerships & Museum Director

The Education, Community Partnerships & Museum Director leads Schubert Club’s scholarship and music education programs and is also responsible for the Schubert Club Music Museum following the principles laid out in the organization’s strategic framework. The Director is responsible for building and maintaining community partnerships, and for providing direction, focus, and vision to maximize the community impact of Schubert Club’s
programming.

POSITION SUMMARY

  • Classification: Full-time, exempt
  • Reports to: Artistic and Executive Director
  • Positions Supervised: Education & Museum Programs Manager, Education & Museum Associate, Project CHEER Director, Musical Promise mentors
  • Salary Range: $77,000-$81,000 per year
  • Comprehensive benefits package and generous 403b match
  • Hybrid on-site and remote
  • Normal business hours 8:30am-430pm with some weekends and evenings


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

EDUCATION (40%): Direct, plan, evaluate and provide hands-on oversight for Schubert Club’s scholarship and music education programs.

  • Plan educationally effective music programs and artist residencies to engage students, families and learners of all ages in music education. Establish and maintain relationships with organizational partners to develop relevant programming. Contract with teaching artists, plan the calendar, and work with staff to manage all programs.
  • Direct the Bruce P. Carlson Student Scholarship Competition and Winners Recital. Coordinate staff to manage all aspects of event promotion, venue booking, judge and volunteer scheduling, logistics, rules and scoring, onsite management, budgeting and payment of awards and judge fees. Annually review competition rules for fairness and stay informed regarding best practices for conducting student competitions.
  • Direct the Musical Promise Scholarship program. Collaborate with local education partners to facilitate the nomination of recipients, match students with mentors, and identify learning opportunities. Monitor and assess student progress, audit scholarships annually, and review each mentor relationship regularly.
  • Coordinate oversight with the Project CHEER Director to ensure the Project CHEER music education program is successful and well-managed. Maintain a strong relationship with partner locations of the Project CHEER program, the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center and Mount Airy Boys & Girls Club.
  • Develop and implement curriculum appropriate for the K-12 public school standards. Identify, build and maintain relationships with schools, teaching artists, and other stakeholders to produce engaging content and to keep Schubert Club music education programs and curriculum relevant and current.
  • Provide direction and oversight for the Student Connections Club.
  • Plan and program additional non-residency education activities as requests and opportunities with community partners arise.
  • Collaborate with Marketing/Communications staff to provide appropriate marketing support for all educational programming.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development to provide program information, materials, budget and evaluation data for grant applications and reporting to funders.
  • Guide and advise the Education Committee to provide successful Committee oversight of Schubert Club’s education programs.
  • With the Artistic & Executive Director, develop and manage the education budget.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS (40%): Play a leadership role in building meaningful connections with diverse Twin Cities community partners.

  • Maintain productive relationships with current community partners to help Schubert Club engage in its partnerships to maximum effect.
  • Seek out and develop new community partnerships which have the potential to strengthen Schubert Club’s work in pursuit of its mission.

MUSEUM (20%): Oversee the Schubert Club Music Museum facility, exhibits, collections, staffing and programming to enhance the Museum’s excellence as a cultural asset known for historical instruments, documents and interactive learning.

  • Maintain permanent Museum exhibits and develop occasional temporary exhibits; ensure exhibits are properly prepared for installation and uninstallation. Research, explore and consult with industry experts for future installations and/or redesigns. Bring recommendations to the Museum Committee for accessions, deaccessions, restoration and conservation.
  • Contract with technical experts to maintain items in the collection.
  • Provide oversight and direction for the work of the Education and Museum Programs Manager, including, guidance in hiring, training, and supervising Museum Guides. Coordinate with the Programs Manager to establish and maintain high standards for Museum guest experience, exhibit integrity, and Guide conduct.
  • Design and produce occasional interactive guest experiences or performance events in the Museum.
  • Create Museum content for online engagement.
  • Seek out and maintain contacts with museum experts to research and stay current on best practices in collection maintenance and museum exhibit innovations, bringing recommendations as needed to the attention of the Artistic & Executive Director.
  • Oversee management of the collection registry database. Ensure the accurate tracking of all items and protection for any items that are on loan or in transit.
  • Ensure that the Museum facility meets current industry standards for a climate-controlled environment, and that it is well-maintained in cooperation with Landmark Center staff and contractors.
  • Collaborate with Marketing/Communications staff to provide appropriate marketing support for all Museum exhibits and programming.
  • Provide data to the Director of Development as needed for grant applications and reports.
  • With the Artistic & Executive Director, develop and manage the Museum budget.

OTHER ACTIVITIES:

Supervise the work of the Education & Museum Programs Manager and the Education & Museum Associate providing clear direction to the team including oversight of the Associate’s role as volunteer coordinator.

  • Provide regular, clear communication of department plans and possibilities to the Programs Manager and
    Associate to ensure programs and operations run efficiently.
  • Give work direction to the Associate for the development of the volunteer program including a calendar of volunteer activities for the entire organization in collaboration with other departments, the promotion of
    volunteer activities and the creation of volunteer appreciation opportunities.

Maintain relationships and support the activities of the Board of Directors, the Museum Committee, and the Education Committee by providing insight and recommendations that enable the Board to further Schubert Club’s mission and goals.

  • Collaborate with committee chairs in planning agendas, attend, participate, and provide reports and materials for Museum Committee and Education Committee meetings.
  • Attend Board meetings and provide information as requested by the Artistic & Executive Director.
  • Lead consensus-building with committees to support educational and museum-based activities.
  • Attend Advisory Circle meetings and report to ensure members are well-informed and engaged.

Uphold Schubert Club’s collaborative practices and support Schubert Club’s mission and goals.

  • Assist with onsite concert and event support as requested and needed.
  • Assist with organization-wide projects as needed.
  • Publicly represent Schubert Club in a manner that consistently upholds the organization’s reputation for
    excellence, inclusion, and integrity.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in music, music education, arts administration, museum administration, or a related field
  • Extensive experience in community-based arts programming and cultural competency with diverse populations
  • Substantive music teaching or arts education program experience
  • Demonstrated skills managing projects, handling deadlines, budgeting and operating within a budget
  • Applicable experience successfully managing and guiding staff
  • Professional, warm and responsive communication skills including public speaking
  • Proficient knowledge of classical music
  • Museum experience preferred

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to physically lift and move museum exhibit items and large instruments up to 50 lbs.
  • Clean background check
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend hours
  • Ability to travel to various locations to be on-site for most programs
