Barry Kempton took over the position of Artistic & Executive Director of Schubert Club in January 2012 following 25 years in music administration in Edinburgh, London and St Paul, Minnesota. Educated in Southampton and Bristol, England, he played piano and trombone from an early age. As a teenager he was a brass semi-finalist in the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year. He held several administrative positions at the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in Edinburgh before moving to the USA in 1995 to take up the post of General Manager at the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. During his eleven-year tenure in St. Paul, his role evolved into Vice President for Artistic Planning, responsible for all performance and educational programming. In 2007, Barry accepted the position of Executive Director for the London-based chamber orchestra, City of London Sinfonia working with Artistic Directors Richard Hickox and Stephen Layton. In January 2012, Barry moved back to St. Paul, Minnesota to take on the leadership of Schubert Club. He also serves on the American Composers Forum Board of Directors and is a member of the Arts Partnership Board. He lives in St. Paul with his wife Cheryl.
