About the Artists:

Soprano Carrie Henneman Shaw has made her mark as a singer who brings a sense of adventure and style to the concert stage. Acclaimed as a “major musical force” (St. Paul Pioneer Press), Shaw collaborates with ensembles across the country, such as Glorious Revolution Baroque, dal Niente and Sonic Inertia (both of Chicago), the Newberry Consort, the Zuchowiczi Consort of Viols (Houston), and Twin Cities-based groups The Rose Ensemble and the Bach Society of Minnesota. As a soloist, Carrie explores wide range of dramatic and virtuosic early and contemporary music, including the chamber works by Steve Stucky, August Read Thomas, and Abbie Betinis and songs by William Byrd, John Dowland and Henry Purcell. Carrie is a student of early-music diva Ellen Hargis and earned a doctorate of musical arts in 2009 from the University of Minnesota.

Baroque violinist Miriam Scholz-Carlson performs regularly with the Lyra Baroque Orchestra and is a founding member of Glorious Revolution Baroque, a chamber music ensemble specializing in music of the 17th century. She was a featured artist last year in the Bach Society’s performance of the Brandenburg Concerto #5 and in their live performance on MPR’s Bach Festival. Ms. Scholz-Carlson has studied with renowned violinist Marc Destrubé and at the Vancouver Early Music Programme as well as with Nancy Wilson and Cindy Marvin. She is a Schubert Club award winner and maintains a large private studio in addition to teaching classes in the coordination and psychology of performance at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN.

Violist da gamba Julie Elhard appears regularly as a soloist and chamber musician making several appearances with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, including the St. Matthew Passion by Bach under the direction of Nicholas McGegan. Her work has been described as “luscious” and “exceptional musicality” (Rochester Post Bulletin). She has been a guest artist with Apollo’s Fire in Cleveland and is a founding member of Violes Egales and Glorious Revolution Baroque. Ms Elhard was awarded a Jerome Foundation grant to study vielle and early string playing with Margriet Tindemans and received a Performing Artist Certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague, Netherlands. She has recorded with the Rose Ensemble and Violes Egales and has been heard over MPR and on the radio program “Harmonia”. Ms. Elhard teaches workshops in North America and currently teaches viola da gamba at the St. Paul Conservatory of Music to children and adults.

The Dolce Wind Quintet was founded in 1995. The woodwind quintet is made up of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon. These 5 instruments make up the core of the wind sound in a symphony orchestra. All 5 of the members of Dolce are freelance musicians around the Twin Cities area. They play in other groups together in various combinations, including the Rochester Orchestra, the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, the Mississippi Valley Orchestra, the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Borderline Philharmonic Chamber Music Camp. Recent public engagements include annual Schubert Club Courtroom Concerts at Landmark Center, St. Paul, several Minnesota Public Radio events including Calhoun Square in Mpls and in Rochester, the Munsinger Garden concert series in St. Cloud, and annual appearances at the Contented Cow British Pub in Northfield.

Nancy Wucherpfennig is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire with B.A. in music education. She is a flutist with Mississippi Valley Orchestra, the Borderline Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra and Dolce Wind Quintet. She also performs regularly with other orchestras and chamber groups in the Twin Cities. Nancy teaches middle school band in Eagan, Minnesota, where she delights in leading young students in small ensembles, concert bands and private lessons. Nancy and husband Brad live in Burnsville and have two sons. When not making music, Nancy is running road races; or running, biking, or walking on their farm land in Wisconsin.

Karen Hansen has been principal clarinetist with the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra since 1980 and with Mississippi Valley Orchestra since 1981. She has been under contract with the Rochester Orchestra since 1991 and is a member of the Incidental Trio with violist Steven Staruch and pianist Theo Wee. Karen’s concerto performances with orchestra include Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie, Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto, and Mendelssohn’s Concert Piece No. 1 for clarinet and bassoon. While Karen’s additional freelance work is usually for the likes of Rochester Choral Arts Ensemble, Thursday Musical and the Phipps Center for the Arts, she has also performed with the Moody Blues. She earned a B.A. from St. Olaf College and an M.A. from University of Wisconsin-Madison. When not making music, Karen composes words as a freelance writer.

Ford Campbell graduated from St. Olaf College with a Bachelor of Music degree in bassoon performance. After studying bassoon at the University of Southern California, he spent a year as the bassoonist with a full-time woodwind quintet, the Amabile Chamber Players, in Jamaica. Since 1986, Ford has been the principal bassoonist in the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra and was a soloist in Mendelssohn’s Concert Piece No. 1 for clarinet and bassoon. He has also performed with Kenwood Chamber Orchestra, the Civic Orchestra of Minneapolis and Bill Fegan Productions Touring Company. Ford is a third grade teacher in the Minneapolis Public Schools.

Vicki Wheeler is a graduate of Luther College with a B.A. in English and religion. She is a member of the Victory Park Brass, Trio Brava, Borderline Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, Rocky Mountain Alphorn Duo, and the Ruby Trio. Vicki also plays Eb tenor horn and is executive manager for the Lake Wobegon® Brass Band. She has performed with other professional groups including the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Sinfonia, and the Minnesota Opera. Vicki also plays the Swiss alphorn and performs frequently at ethnic events and in school settings. She has studied horn with Herb Winslow, of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Charles McDonald, of the Minnesota Orchestra. When not behind a mouthpiece, you can find her sailing the waters of Lake Superior, camping in the Boundary Waters, or fixing the old cabin in the north woods with her husband, Kurt. She currently teaches private horn lessons in her home in Minneapolis, much to the delight of Wally, the standard poodle!
